So I’m thinking about how easy it is sometimes for some of us to become myopic, to narrow the focus of awareness down to something that is attention grabbing and emotion inducing, probably either bright and shiny or a gruesomely fascinating wreck on the side of the road.

But it's only part of the big picture. And to get lost in detail is to miss the rest.

Something that has become useful to me as a reminder or a map of how to see a bigger picture is research that some folks at Harvard have been doing over the years. William Torbert and some others. And what their research is showing is that, in general, at any one point in time a person has approximately 50 percent of our energy, awareness, or mastery focused on our present condition. What we know, and  who we know. And who we experience ourselves to be in this here now time in our life.

So if approximately 50 percent of me is here, where is the other half of my attention and energy?

What their research shows is that about 25 percent of us is trailing behind, dragging its feet. You know: “I don't want to.” “I can't.” “Never done it before.” “I tried it once and it didn't work.”

And 25 percent of us is out there ahead, kind of scouting, looking for any new opportunities.

So the way that I envision this is a train. And there's a very nice Pullman car and it's got a dining facility and a nice berth for sleeping. You can live comfortably in this car. And then there is a caboose on the train. It's kind of bringing up the rear.

5 Traits of Every Good Life Coach: A Parable

Once upon a time, there was a very successful businessman named Jason.  He had amassed an incredible fortune.  He had all the worldly treasures that anyone would ever want.  He had the picture-perfect family.  He dressed impeccably, he traveled to far off lands, he shook hands with amazing individuals, but all the while he was miserable.  He loathed his demanding schedule and somewhere along the way he had lost his passion for life.  He admired others who had mastered their inner fire; who fanned the flames of possibilities in their lives.  At this point in his career he had become a robot, a servant to the necessity of living rather than the joys of life.   He was restless in these days of his life.    

As he was walking down the street one day, a younger man approached him and handed him a business card.  “Sir, I couldn’t help but notice you weren’t smiling, and I always think we have lots to smile about.  Don’t you?” 

Jason couldn’t help but snicker.  As he looked down at the card it said GROW Coaching and as he flipped over the back of the card he saw the man’s contact information Patrick Smith, Transpersonal Life Coach.  His tag line read, “What is your dream for this lifetime?” 

Jason stuffed Patrick’s card into his pocket and continued walking down the street to his meeting.  As he sat in his business meeting he was distracted by his most recent encounter.  Who was this man who had randomly bumped into him on the street, but more importantly why was he thinking about him?  He leaned into the curiosity he felt and chuckled. 

Jason went on about his life and about two months later as he was walking down the street he again randomly bumped into Patrick.  Patrick met him with an incredible smile.  “Good to see you again Jason.  I wondered when I would run into you again!”

Four Reasons Why Transpersonal Work Is Best Accomplished in a Group

We can achieve deep healing in individual sessions or within a group. How do they compare? Here are four distinctions from our experience with both. 

  1. In an individual therapy session there is often a lot of transference and countertransference. In the past, before managed care, many therapists spent years analyzing the transference. In other words, he/she was using the client’s projections and dream symbols to be able to see the shadow parts of the client. Here are two problems with that approach:

    • The first is that just talking about this deeper unconscious material does bring it to awareness, but does not resolve it. These shadow parts and complexes reside in the depths of the unconscious mind. Hypnotherapy is a major tool that we prefer that takes the client into those depths in a way that is self-directed and involves little intervention on the part of the therapist. Countertransference is significantly bypassed.
    • Often the therapist is doing as much projecting as the client is. In other words, many therapists are not doing their own personal transformational work, which means not working through their own shadow parts.

  2. What a therapist knows about a client is mostly what he/she experiences in the office: a very unnatural and limited environment. No wonder Freudian and Jungian analysis took twenty years, with the client attending sessions multiple times per week! The only interactions the therapist observes are the ones he/she has personally with the client. In Jungian terms, in the office the client presents their persona or their out front personality. So, the therapist knows only one side of the story, especially when it comes to interpersonal relationships. What the client reports is brought in by the superficial persona or by a shadow part’s one-sided report.

Anxiety: Hypnotherapy Helps and Here’s How

I remember being in grad school and my Abnormal Psychology professor sharing that per the Diathesis Stress model, we all have a propensity towards the vulnerabilities and stresses of daily living.  His lecture that day has been with me ever since.  In a sense, we have certain inclinations to experience bouts of sadness, anxiousness, and fearful thinking.   When we begin living from these spaces we can begin to feel the quality of our lives waning.  The energy and enthusiasm we once had for living might be discharged towards our preoccupation with the future, or anxieties about the present.  Our mind informs us that perhaps something is about to happen and we won’t be ready for it.  From a more expansive perspective, anxiety is a green light for engaging in personal work.

“Does hypnotherapy work?” is one of the top questions we’re asked here at the Wellness Institute. Some of those who ask have been misled by myths or misconceptions about hypnotherapy. Others simply don’t have all the information they need to reach that conclusion.

Despite our more than 30 years’ educational experience, we’ve always found that those who have experienced firsthand the benefits of hypnotherapy can best answer this question.

With that in mind, we’ve compiled a few client success stories that offer their own perspective on just how effective hypnotherapy can be.

Does Hypnosis Work For Weight Loss?

A CNN story centered on a woman who was 5-foot-6 and weighed 287 pounds, and underwent “hypnosis gastric bypass” under the supervision of a hypnotherapist in 2007. The “procedure” is exactly what it sounds like: essentially a visualization of the surgical process, from meeting the doctor to leaving the hospital afterward.

The hypnotherapist explains that after the visualization, “the mind believes the stomach is smaller,” and therefore the appetite is smaller, too. The patient, Julie Evans, experienced immediate results after her first session: “After her first session, Evans said she started craving spinach. By the next day, she said she was eating a quarter of what she had before.”

She began losing weight immediately, and with ongoing commitment to hypnotherapy, continued to lose weight and keep it off. After two years, she reached her goal weight of 150 pounds (nearly half her original body weight). She has maintained this weight for more than three years — and has reclaimed the life she felt her additional weight was holding her back from.
